There is something compelling about great trucks, this one in particular completed an incredible 30,000 mile journey around South America and Antarctica. So, how did we stumble upon this once-in-a-lifetime rally?

Taking a closer look at the converted garbage truck story; it did resemble an RV, and one comment even suggested Unimog. Put the rugged, military spec Mercedes trucks together will hardcore, luxury RVs and you’ll find yourself at Global X Vehicles. After browsing through the models, we come across the travel section, something to challenge yourself within a GXV 4×4.

This epic adventure took 1 year and covered over 30,000 miles. Passing through many countries with drastic differences, this trek was done in a rugged 4×4 RV.

n 2006 Mike and Rene Van Pelt completed a 1 year, 30,000 miles expedition travel throughout South America driving one of our GXV expedition vehicles. They started their adventure by shipping their expedition vehicle, which they proudly called KOLOB, from Miami to Lima, Peru. Their expedition journey route began in Peru and continued down to Chile, Bolivia, Paraguay, Brazil, Uruguay, Argentina, and back to Chile, Peru and then to Ecuador. They also had great adventure while visiting Antarctica, Easter Island and the Galapagos Islands. Their return shipping was from Ecuador to Mexico, and the last leg of their trip was then from Mexico to home.

Thinking of crossing a continent doesn’t immediately bring RVing to mind. An adventure it would be, yes, but until seeing their wheels, I wouldn’t have thought of this. Very impressive journey!

Not sure I’d be up for something of this length, but these trucks have certainly piqued my interest, and could change my idea of RVing… It can be extreme!
